I can't find a forum on these speakers so it may take a little experimenting.
They likely do require a speaker driver board, yes. I haven't experimented with them myself but they were the smallest speakers I could find for sale. That site also has driver boards listed, so if you were feeling adventurous you could see if you could find a set and mess with those.
However, if you're not super experienced with speakers and things in the sound category I suggest you start with this:

Pimoroni is an an awesome brand. Their stuff is super high quality and all of their resources (manuals, drivers, software, etc.) are all easy to get. This is more of a plug-and-play setup instead of being more involved like a true wired speaker setup would be, but it's a stepping stone in that direction. This is compact enough that it may even fit in your TicTac box.
And hey, if you're feeling adventurous, you could hook up a microphone and try making a voice assistant in a TicTac box
