A question or two about wires and AWG.

Post by nickz » Sun Nov 27, 2016 7:31 pm

Hey all,

I'm securing cables for my project and have a question about what is okay to use.

I had planned on using some Ethernet CAT 5e cable (24AWG) for most of the project.
As for the USB wiring, I have an old USB cable that was from my Droid 2 back in the day. It's most likely 28AWG as that is what I've found most USB cables to be. Should I be using 28/24 AWG usb cables?

Is this what others have been using? Have you found success in using these types of cables/guage mentioned above? I can't seem to find a solid resource on the specific types of wires/awg to use for the project and want to make sure that my components are getting the appropriate connections.

Thanks.

EDIT: Somehow this got posted in General Project Chat instead of Project Help. If a mod wants to move this to Project Help, please do.

Use this to calculate voltage drop and resistance and stuff: http://www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html

The general rule is thicker for power.

I use 22AWG for all my power wires & sound and 28AWG for my data, teensy buttons, etc.

Basically, don't have some shitty 28AWG wire coming from your power boost to feed everything. Bad idea.

Fair enough, thanks for the response.

I'm just going to pick this up https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B4 ... N6QABYC6HS and use it for the whole project.

You may find that the CAT 5 cables might be too rigid. They were for my liking at least.
