Just finished GBZ, Having trouble loading ROMS

Post by EOMFD » Mon Jan 30, 2017 1:41 pm

So I've just finished my first RaspberryPi project and I'm really happy how it turned out. But I'm having trouble loading roms. I'm trying to use the USB drive method. But it doesn't seem to work. I've made sure it's formated correctly and has the folder labeled retropie. But when I check to see if everything populated in folder like it should it's empty. The USB stick blinks for a little bit during start up, but nothing after that. I'm routing it through the helder board as USB port 1, I'm assuming it's working fine since the usb stick blinks and I can use a keyboard through the port. I've also tried enabling USB rom transfer but that doesn't seem to work, since during start up I see that it failed to start usbmount@dev-sda.service. am I missing something here? Also the screen is difficult to read. I've tried changing the resolution in boot config but it doesn't help, any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Here's a picture to show you the screen

I would say make sure the folder name is all lower case, and wait till the pi is fully booted. Pop the stick in, it will flash for a bit, then stop for a bit, then flash for a while, then stop flashing. Give it a few seconds to make sure it's happy then pull the stick from the pi and see if you have folders.

With regards to the screen issues, I think it's pretty normal. The screens don't have many pixels, so there isn't much to play with really. Try some of the different themes available, you may need the install them from the menu in the RetroPie section, then you can choose them from the start menu in the main emulationstation screen

or make it really really really really tiny!! https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2919

Yep the folder is in all lowercase. I've tried inserting the USB before and after start up and still nothing, it just blinks 16-17 times and that's it. I also try to leave it on for at least 5 mins. Also thanks for the heads up on the themes, I'll probably tackle that after I figure out this USB issue.

well I've tried connecting the usb drive directly to the zero's micro usb port to see if that works. and all I get is a flickering screen and the usb gets hot, so I immediately stopped. Shouldn't the drive at least work from there? I still have no idea how to get this to work.

Solution found.

Issue: Retropie will not write subfolders to the blank SD Card folder "retropie".
Normally after installing Retropie, one would simply format an extra micro SD card and add new folder "retropie". Then plug in a card reader to micro usb slot on the Pi and Retropie will automatically create the necessary subfolders. However, this is not happening.

My setup: AIO 2.2A, PI Zero V1.3. I'm not currently using wifi. Instead, the files are transferred manually.

Solution:
First disconnect the D+/D- input wires (found at the top center of the AIO board) from the AIO to the Pi Zero.
Then go through the normal procedure by inserting the micro SD card reader into the micro SD slot on the PI with a recently formatted micro SD card and the newly created folder "retropie". Wait a minute for the read/write process to complete. Do the file transfer normally, then reconnect the D+/D- input wires.

Use a Futaba style plug to allow quick connecting without having to dissassemble or unsolder anything. If you already have a good connection from the D+/D- pads on the AIO to the Pi, just cut the wires from the D+/D- input pads to Pi in the middle and splice the male plug to the wire ends on one half and the female plug to the other half. Splicing is a safer than resoldering to the pads on the PI zero. Those two pads are very close together and easy to short or damage... as I've discovered.

Servo extension wire and male/female plug below. Just trim off one of the wires since you only need two or use a different style plug. This just worked for me because I had extra.

Don't listen to ''Tomatoflames'' ..

Set your usb on 1.1 speed, overwrite the cfg and cmd in helders support thread (page 1) now when it runs on usb 1.1 your usb starts transferring, note the blinking of the usb stick will be alot better now.
Buuut... your keyboard won't work anymore probably, and will work on 2.0 (standard cfg and cmd) so it's one of the two.
You can also leave as it is now, and reboot.. and it starts copying while booting, yet when emulationstation starts it stops, so maybe not all roms get copied, you can reboot several times... now if you like to add 1 or 2 games a time, it will be no problem.

That's cool that worked for you. The advantage of the disconnect is the keyboard and buttons continue to work fine.
