Newbie questions concerning soldering and cables.

Hi Folks,

I ordered stuff for my GBZ project and I received the first parts, now I have a few questions which were not answered anywhere on this forum (atleast I have not found anything concerning my questions though I looked, dumb me).

I started desoldering the Gameboy Speaker from a broken GameBoy. That was quite easy, but I wonder what temperature is the right to solder and desolder parts. I am very afraid to break stuff and my soldering tool can go up to 500 degrees celsius. What is the perfect temperature for soldering and desoldering?

Is it possible that i broke the speaker because I used too much heat?

I went with like 300 degrees. Good/ Bad?

I also used 300 degrees for soldering, followed some online youtube guides went amazingly easy (I randomly soldered and desoldered cables to broken hardware to get a hang of it).

I have not found a good crimp tool for very thin cables. How do you guys cut cables?

hey, i think 300 degrees should be fine, i typically solder at a little higher temp because i am impatient haha
im not really an expert though, i think it depends on the solder you use. i use the lead based stuff

Depending on the Soldering Station I stay between 280-300, anything higher can damage traces and vias if you keep the heat on there too long. I've seen some bad solder jobs with my boards where people burned off an entire pad more than likely bad soldering iron and excessive heat and no soldering skills but the heat can be bad if held in one spot for too long.

Yes as most units are in Celsius to begin with and take a look at the 898d+ hot air rework station for something decent and affordable.

Just try it out. Hook it up to 5volts and see if it turns on.
