If you can now type

dmesg

This will give you a big list of things that have happened on you pi. Scroll through and find the fbtft ones, see if there are any errors listed

Sorry for asking now, I feel stupid.
My screen had VCC instead of VIN, so 3.3 v wasn't enough power.
It works now, thanks for your help and your great tutorial!

I'm glad you managed to get it running! Some screens have been tweaked to run on 5v for arduino use

Yeah, some of those red boards have 3v regulators on them. The actual screen itself will only be 3v

I followed the guide and got it working.
I made two videos for comparison next to the HDMI display running at same time.

It was slow FPS at first:

But then after tweaking the SPI transfer setting its almost as fast as the HDMI screen now:

great news!!! Thats a good way to demonstrate the speed differences.

I have had a little play with the debug options. If you add "debug=32" at the end of the fbtft.conf file, you can see how fast the screen is actually updating by running "dmesg". turns out the true speed of the screen is only actually about 30fps. the fact that our eyes only need about 24fps and that the TV's we used to play these games on were only 30fps, means that its more than ample

the biggest issue with the refresh rate and emulators is the tearing from a slight mismatch since a lot of old arcade games ran nice an snappy at 50 or 60 Hz
