I wonder how you do, plus it takes ages to heat up thats insane, it doesn't even comes with a proper stand or anything, I could not use that anymore.

(I havent tried RS ones, though one on hardware store are pretty much the same I guess)

They're the same quality. So don't waste money that way. They do take ages to heat up (if the tips are burnt). Every soldering session when finished, I take the tip to a wire wheel until I get back down to bare metal and re-tin it for the next day. Takes about 4 minutes. If I had a station, I'd skip that hassle, but I don't mind it. I just don't have the money to put it into a $150 station (because I'm busy buying other needless crap!)

As long as I do that, it's as good as any other (including heating up). The plastic handle has a lip, and I just put it on a cut 2x4 the tip is a few inches above the work bench.

It is around 50-60$ on Aliexpress and other sites and i read a few reviews that are pretty good.
With he right power supply it heats in about 5 seconds and is really small, so it works well with soldering tiny electronic components.

If i weren't so cheap, i would buy it, too. But you need a rest and something to clean it. Also, the power supply is not included.

You can even modify the firmware to suit your needs. All in all, this really looks like a good deal so far.

I recently got myself a TS100, it's well worth the money, I am aware of the TS80 but it was £25 more and for me that was a little out of the budget.
This iron is amazing especially for the price, I highly recommend it, I was going to get a 3 in 1 SMD, PSU and soldering iron for £65 on ebay (from China) but decided it'd be better to start with the TS100 and move up from there (get a hot air station etc).

The TS100 heats up in about 7 seconds for me (to 300C) and since I got one with the slanted edge tip it has no problem with any boards and is perfect for SMD and is actually okay enough to use with larger wires etc.
However, I did see a pretty nice looking home made soldering iron from a guy called Electronoobs on youtube, it looks pretty great and is Arduino based, he claims it can cost as little as $15.

has anyone tried a project like this? I may well do in the future when I'm a little more experienced.
If you're starting off I recommend the TS100 and I've heard good things about some of those Yihua ones too.

+the TS100 works with most laptop chargers, I'm using a 19v laptop charger and it works well.
