Alternative to 3D printing (moldable plastic)

Post by Francis » Thu Aug 18, 2016 1:13 am

I found this cool product while surfing online. It's plastic that can be molded by simply heating it. What's really cool is that it can seemingly be reheated an infinite amount of times allowing for 100% recyclability.
This looks like an awesome alternative to 3D printing since it's cheap and doesn't require special tools. It only requires water and your hands.

Here's the video I found:

It is sold by adafruit: https://www.adafruit.com/products/2504? ... aQodHsQOnQ

Has anyone ever experimented with this? What are the results?

I've used it before. It definitely wouldn't work as a DMG shell. It doesn't have the ability to be molded (and release) in a precise manner in my experience. Best use to me has been adding handles or hooks to things.

How about button wells? I was thinking of using existing buttons with moldable plastic around them to make wells. Could give the proper interior shape and you could carve off the excess exterior bits. Anyone tried this? Not sure whats best to use to keep the pieces from bonding as well. Aluminum foil, wax paper, oil, ....? Or perhaps roll a cylinder, slice, and drill out the appropriate hole?
