Solder show off

Post by Jake C » Thu Nov 02, 2017 9:24 pm

I just wanted to show off the solder job on my 2nd MintyPi. 1st time go on continuity for all pads. I then trimmed down with flush cuts and ran a 1/8th bevel tip over them to clean it up. 1mm 60/40 solder, oateys flux from a tin, and a 898D+ set to 335.

Start with a clean tip, flux, solder, flux again, then insert. Remove tip and then reheat with the side of the tip. Trim and reheat with bevel, wipe off with a wet cloth.

Yes, they look mighty fine!
Absolutely nothing wrong with the soldering there.
BUT...
(sorry about this...)
on a minty, the pi sits super close to the battery. as you've left prolific raised blobs on the joints, you will probably get impressions on your battery... this "could" create problems like internal shorts in the battery, which could lead to much badness...

If I were you, I'd take a photo of that fine soldering work and frame it, then try and wick off some of the surface solder to make the assembly as flat as possible.

They are much flatter than the photos make them appear. The top photo is the finished product, but the angle isn't great for showing height. I am also using a thermal pad on top the battery.
