30fps isnt too shabby, especially for such a cheap and simple screen setup. If you nudge the speed up any further, you will just get crazy screen. This is what happens if i do speed=100000000

@codeman0624 has done some digging and found the actual spi speed you get is actually linked to the core frequency of the pi, so you are limited to the speeds that actually make an impact on standard installs. Overclocking the pi will mean that you get a higher clock speed, and so in turn a faster spi bus, and as a result, higher FPS
for me, this screen seems a better option than a Gearbest/BW/Composite....
will cost cheaper, look alot clearer and if wired properly should have a lower profile than the others....
(just need to find one with a better viewing angle, like Wermy & Helder have done with the mintyPi revision)

i actually did notch it up to 120000000 right at the begining of setting it up (me trying to be over smart  ), as it worked at 99000000 on the initial install.... didnt go so well :(

i did see codeman0624 post on this....
but i've held off on messing with overclocking and other setting (for now)

the last time i tried to overclock hoping to get some mame games working better, i couldnt get it stable (crashed alot)....
one of the reasons might have been i was trying to wing it without really knowing what i was doing....

im definitely gonna look into it a bit more, as it might just help with this screen (if only a little)

Im getting a 60fps too when i tried a 2.2" spi screen but obviously not 60fps at all.

Show video framerate on the retroarch setting when playing a game.

that what i thought, until kite came along and popped that balloon :( .....

i was actually getting around the 30fps range (which isnt that bad for most of the retro games, IMHO)

It was obvious to me though, that what's emulationstation is showing is not the actual spi framerate. Im glad there's a way check the actual framerate.

I hope it will improve when i solder it directly to the pi.

You can't beat that slender profile
Image

You need to find an ips version of the screen. You may end up having to put manufacturing requests in via alibaba, and buying them in the hundreds after a very awkward broken English conversation. A quick search found this

https://m.alibaba.com/product/604010786 ... 0x400.html

They might be able to make an 18 pin version of this 🤔
Get a small cheep LCD in your project https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=2312
Wrap it all round a battery https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2292
Or use a custom PCB to make it really small https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2512
or make it really really really really tiny!! https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2919

thanks....

i think once i actually complete a build with this screen, it might prove/show people that its a very viable screen to use....
and maybe a better option than the Gearbest/BW/Composite screens....

ordering a hundred wouldnt be any issue then, and i think the cost would still be cheaper (if not about that of the others) even with the addition of your pcb added to it, or one manufactured with the screen....

you'll be able to use it in a GBZ or GBA build and i've seen a 3.2" spi fit nicely into a Game Gear as well....
and maybe at a stretch in a NDSL (if you can figure out how to wire through the hinge with a ribbon cable)

I could knock up a 3.2 inch version of this if your interested.

The boards become too expensive at OSHPark, but if your ordering stacks of screens you may as well go all in 😀

that looks like a good solution.....

not knocking anyone....
but from what i've seen from the mintyPi project, alot of people have had issue with these type of screens even with Helder making really easy....

so an easy board is a good idea....

based on where i was plannig to have the pi zero in the gb shell, i was even thinking of your board being slightly altered to make for less wire lenght

just ideas at the moment.....

I could lend a hand on the design. Could even do them as solder pads on the back of the board, or even right angle header pins

thanks..... i'll definitely need a hand in that....

i think the first challenge would be to find screens that have a better viewing angle (already started that ball rolling)....
this screen is fine, but its not ideal.... tilt to the left, its fine.... tilt to the right and its not great viewing....

next would be to see if people are really interested....
3.2" clear screen over a fuzzy 3.5" screen
and the fact that its using 3v instead of 5v (which should also be better for battery life)
lower profile

should be a no brainer, but you'd be surprised

I can get those screens in wide viewing angle like the new mintyPi LCDs I got for this batch. There is a a few weeks wait time since they have to be made but I can usually get samples, let me know if you need my help acquiring some.
