Your Retro Repair Stories

Post by NuclearCassette » Wed Jul 26, 2017 12:13 am

What old tech have you repaired before? Say you changed some capacitors out on an old TV, or you cleaned your old NES 72pin connector. I want to hear it all. It just might be useful to me ;) .

As for me, I've changed out the fuse on a dead SNES and got it working again, I got a severely damaged Ms. Pac Man machine up and running again with my dad. I'm currently working on a 1974 TV with some bad caps and other high voltage components. It's hard, but it pays off to have a 70s Zenith TV with really good colors that'll work great for my old consoles.

Still, I'd love to hear your stories more than my own, so shoot away :D .
Bring back cathode ray tubes, goodnight!

My favorite retro repair story was from when I was around 5 or 6 years old. I had a dog who loved chewing through my NES controller wires. I figured out how to twist the exposed copper wire together to fix the controllers using stickers as electrical tape. I'll never forget the day when my mom came home and told me that she had a surprise for me; the surprise being an actual roll of electrical tape. I was so happy because you could imagine how my stickers would hold up keeping the wires together.

Gameboy DMG's: repaired missing screen lines, battery leak corrosion (and the same goes for just about any of my son's toys... duracell... the silent toy killer!)
Computers: fixed my wifes amstrad cpc6128's disk drive belt, recapped the smd capacitors on several amigas
Waaaay too much to really remember it all...

I was blowing out something at work and one of colleagues asked if it was a cartridge... (it was!)

it was unrelated. But I'm a software engineer, I just happened to have some of my retro gear with me (my laptop bag is actually a camera bag which can hold a pretty big DSLR and lenses. instead of my DSLR I have Gameboy stuff in there  like literally full of gameboy stuff - A DMG, a GBC, a GB Light, Gameboy camera, a NDS Lite and a load of cartridges - also a PSP1000 converted into a CHIP Station Portable. I'd take a pic, but I've left it at home today... )
