Circuit Sword 320x240 resolution "funny" scaling artifacts

Post by andershp » Sun Sep 08, 2019 4:46 am

Having just put together this awesome build (kite, thanks!!) I'm noticing my screen resolution looking "fuzzy"/having many scaling artifacts.
It's like the screen in some situations tries to render another resolution than it should, some pixel-lines trying to be double and some not.
The raspberries at bootup look crisp, but EmulationStation, NES games and Master System games look weird, even though I specifically set the resolution in the runcommand-launch menu to "320x240".

Anyone else having this issue? See examples below:

I downloaded the newest Circuit Sword Software version 1.3.2 - but is this optimized for 640x480 screens or something?

One should think that these scaling artifacts shouldn't be present "out of the box", or at least some other than me would have noticed them?

I noticed that Megadrive games look near perfect - and the resolution of this system was in fact 320x240!
Does the firmware somehow stretch other systems to fit the screen?

I'm surprised that noone other than me has noticed this on the forum..?

I'm pretty sure this is down to the app that you are running and the fact that it is 320x240 screen. From the menu options within the app you should be able to enable "integer scaling" which will give a 'pixel perfect' scaling number, try that and see what you think

Just an update:
The integer scaling setting i RetroPie did no difference, but setting video smooth=true in retroarch.cfg really helped!

I'm usually not a fan of smoothing, but it seems this only adds a bit of smooth when needed, meaning that games that run 320x240 will not get any smoothing. Looks much better with this setting on I think!
