5V Screen mod - Wermy Screen Alternatives

Post by Lphillimore » Mon Jan 16, 2017 7:53 pm

Hi All,

Currently awaiting my Gearbest screen and also a known working BW from Amazon (UK) to kick off my project.

In the meantime I'm playing with my first screen which was from eBay and seems to be the one that Wermy listed here (and attached) with the ghosting / display resolution issues:

http://sudomod.com/game-boy-zero-screen-alternatives/

For testing purposes I have connected this screen upto a 12v source and input video direct from my old Raspberry Pi Model B with composite video out. This worked fine albeit the image was a tad rough.

I then attempted 5v power and the screen flickers once but that's it. As per the post linked above, has anyone got this screen and managed to get it running off of 5v? Im keen to modify this board as im still keen to use it for test purposes and am keen to see how 5v displays.

Cheers

Does it flicker when powered by battery? Or also when the Pi is powered from a wall charger? I had a similar issue (and a very similar screen), had a cheap 'powerboost' and it flicker when battery powered only. So I got the Adafruit Powerboost and it's all good.

When powered from mains.

It flickers once but does not come on, I should say.

Assuming because the 5v is not enough to currently power it.

As yet I have not connected it up to my battery.

Test setup is:

Mains ---> 12v PSU ---> Raspberry Pi B (Composite out) ---> Screen = Working

Mains ---> 5v PSU ---> Raspberry Pi B (Composite out) --> Screen = Flickers once, stays off.

Any ideas @wermy ?

Cheers

Managed to get this running off of 5v.

Checked the voltage regulator and found it was an XL1509 chip.

Looked it up and the easiest way was to simply solder pins 1 + 2 together as per the pics.

Success!

Right, I didn't realize from your original post that you didn't do any modification to that chip to make it run 5V :D
Well, good that it works :)

Yeah probably wasnt very clear in hindsight! :D :D

It also turns out that this screen is different from the one that Wermy referenced.

Either way, all good!
