This one worked for me, with or without external power.

Why do people keep saying that? You need a hub. You need a keyboard or you're going to get frustrated from pulling the sd card every time you need to edit a config.

You can't even turn on wifi or Bluetooth in retropie without a keyboard.
Before putting the GBZ togehter i have already connected to Wifi with a keyboard. Now that wifi is set up i do not see why i need a USB-hub either? I can use Putty or WinSCP via Wifi to make changes or transfer roms if I need. Or am i missing something? I would love to not need a usb-hub in there, and i am now at that step of the guide.

Will i really need it? "Want" and "need" are different.

If you already have a Pi Zero W with wifi set up then there is no need for a hub really. You can use the teensy with the single usb of the zero, and SSH into the pi to do everything else. But, if you ever need a keyboard or anything else you won't have the option. up to you.

On my first build I did not use a hub, but I also did not use the teensy either. I wired my controls directly to the GPIO pins, and then extended the pi zero micro usb to the EXT slot with a regular size usb. That way I could plug in a usb hub there if needed, or just a keyboard etc...

2nd build has helders AIO with the built in hub, which is handy since I just left my wifi dongle inside the case and ran a usb to the ext slot again.

if your in the UK,
i found a really low cost option in Pound World.... you cant beat it.... you just have to go in store, no online...

its works flawlessly with my pi zero, that i use for testing.... i have had at times a keyboard, wifi dongle and even a controller
(never missed a beat)
