Removing Micro USB?

Post by Mitaccio » Sun May 28, 2017 4:58 pm

I see so many people that are using the contrast port on the DMG shell for the HDMI out for the RP0. I am hoping to do the same but my micro USB ports protrude and prevent me from having the RP0 from sitting flush with the side of the shell. Are people removing the micro usb ports from their RP0 or am I missing something easier?

In an ideal scenario you want to remove them, but I just grinded them down....

But if you are wanting to do this, either make it one of the last things you do, or have a spare pi zero to work with.... After grinding there's a high possibility that you'll only be using them via the test points on the back...

Removing is only recommended if you know what your doing

Perfect. I was planning my build based in part on yours VG. Very clean and well organized. Hopefully mine is nearly as good. The RP0 is already in use for my first GBZ so it's just a matter of removing the USB points.

I can testify to killing a Pi from being too blasé when removing these. Nice new keyring though... 8-)

Grinding them down is a good option as @veterangamer says.

You can also make some small incisions into the GBZs shell which allows the Pi to sit flush...ive done this once before.

Or if you're not fussed slightly angle the HDMI as its not that noticeable and in most cases probably not used.

Still hoping to find the config that enables the HDMI when you plug in....Cant seem to find it

I've always been a believer in removing things properly, everyone should invest in one of these:

Especially if you're going to do more than one of these projects, a decent solder rework station is totally worth it!

I'm nearly finished with my first build and I opted for cutting away at the shell to make room for the ports. I mainly wanted to leave the pi completely in-tact because I wasn't confident in my abilities that I wouldn't need to resort to using the on-board usb input during the build. I tried to do this by removing the least amount of material, and found that I needed to make small cut outs as well as removing part of the "lip" that runs the perimeter of the back half. This also adds another point of stability by "pinching" the usb ports in the side wall.
