What should I order first?

Post by livinin82 » Sun Jun 18, 2017 10:45 am

Trying to build my first GBZ. Already have helders AIO board and a pi zero.

My question is what should I order first since I'm ordering these parts as money becomes available.

Is anything in danger of not being available again...are there some parts that will take longer than others to arrive?

Trying to be proactive and make sure when I'm ready to build there aren't some obsolete parts I need. Thanks y'all.

Order your Banggood power supply. They are cheap but take weeks to get. Then get Cambles shutdown switch for the BG power supply, if still available.

If I buy the Adafruit 1000c does that cancel the need for these two?? Or is this a better option?

You technically don't need a safe shutdown but Camble is currently sold out of the one for the Adafruit PB. The Adafruit cancels the need for the BG powersuppy.

But a safe shutdown switch would be required either way, correct? Adafruit doesn't have a safe shutdown programmed in?

Safe shutdown isn't required at all. You can shut down the system in the main menu by going into the options and telling RetroPie to shut down, all using your controller buttons. Once the system shuts down you can turn off the power.

The safe shutdown isn't necessary. But it's nice. I like being able to flip a switch and walk away. I suggest the Banggood power supply rather than the Adafruit based on 1) cost, 2) cost and 3) cost. Plus the shutdown isn't available for the Adafruit power supply.

I suggest making a list of parts that you want, costs and lead time. Parts from china are cheaper but take way longer to receive. I'd start with a case so you can get things mounted and test along the way.

Personally, I'd buy a case. You can get them for less than $10, and they are great motivation!

Yes, start with the case. Not only is it satisfying work but you will be able to plan much better ahead what parts you need. I am thinking of space configuration. Having (or not) a safeshut down will impact you powerboost/RPZ positioning. Also, do you want a cartridge that reads you sd or not? If not, you have a very deep game boy case that gives room to a lot of play around. If you do, well, plan better ahead and be careful with gluing every parts. Wermy mentions it a lot in his GBZ and custom GBZ videos, test the case after every single step.
