Well, yeah...in hindsight, i tend to agree with you lol.
This is becoming a bit of a PITA and frustrating. It's something to do, yes, but no progress....
I'm tempted to get one of those hdmi 3.5 LCDs with extra PSU and try it that way.
My point with going gpio was for power....

Well, in the beginning i thought the same.. but those gpio screens are really worse for gaming, because of their FPS rate, so you will end up beeing dizzy looking at it. the best would be a 3,5 screen from gearbest. and remember, back in the days the game consoles only had composite output, so using hdmi is obsolete because the games are made in the old output and res. so don't worry. GPIO.. i say no :geek:

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I've been studying and learning what is best for these projects, and the LCD's connected directly to the Rpi are not that great. I've bought those from aliexpress, and the only thing i'm missing is a safe shutdown button... But i didn't want to spend like 30 bucks for a tiny circuit... although is extremely important.... any idea on how i can DIY that button?

Oh, by the way, here's a teardown parts list of my project:

- 3.5inch LCD 320x240 module from aliexpress (x2)
- DMG-01 Original GB case (x3 - just in case something goes wrong)
- Button PCB (generic from ebay) (x2)
- 3.7V PLiB battery 3000mAh (x2) ~ don't know yet how to parallel them and keeping their protection circuit intact
- 3.7V Li-ion Lithium Battery Mini USB to USB A Power Supply Module Board Charge Module 5V 1A (x3)
- mono amplifier 2.5W PAM8302
- 1w original gb speaker (x2)
- original cartridge shell (x3)
- 4 port USB Hub (x2)
- ATmega 32U4 Leonardo Pro micro (x3)
- stereo audio amplifier 5W (something on my mind...)
- tactile buttons 6x6x10mm
- analog Joystick Module for PSP 1000
- 1mm acrylic glass 10x20cm
- Step drill, up to 12mm
- other small bits (3.5mm jack, on_off switch, buttons, rubber pads, microUSB board, capacitors, resistors, 26AWG wire, 24AWG solid wire, 10K potentiometer

Hmm for the 2 battery's you could take 2 of those mini charger boards from 1 buck a piece and paralell them and use only one charger port, so you can charge both battery's at the same time with one port, though using 2 circuits. i suggest letting the screen run from a second battery would be great then. because these screens can run fine on 3.3 volts, so 3.7 for the screen would be perfect, and then having the other battery going to the powerboost thus powering the pi and the rest at 5v. but if you have a powerboost with charging function you could use only one charger board(1 buck) and use the powerboost as second charger board and paralell this +and - (so if you plug in the usb charger it runs power to both boards. hope you understand what i meant lol.

Yes, i understood. That power board i have has the function of charging one 3.7v input, so what you say is parallel those 1buck boards which is connected to each battery... but i'm wandering about space for all those boards..
As for the shutdown, i didn't fully understand those boards you post. Will they issue a shutdown command after a certain amount of time as elapsed (reference is made to those resistors and time)?
If that's the case, i think there might be a simple solution with only a tactile button and a long press command to shutdown..

I meant , one mini usb and from there 2 wires to the powerboost usb (together) (where you normally put the charger in) i'm not sure about those timers but the gpio pin senses a voltage drop and starts shutting down then, the same as a laptop is on low power.. so a long press of a button i dont know, what i know is that, if you switch the gb off, there's still power in a capacitor wich runs out slow, let say 10 seconds, at 9 seconds the gpio pin senses that lower voltage and while the capacitor is discharging meanwhile the pi shuts down, so that short thereafter the capacitor is empty. but these timer switches should do the same in combination with a certain resistor. i haven't tried yet i ordered few.. but s far i can judge they're the same as such a shutdown board except the switch, wich i consider reusable from the orig GB (if you have), but these timers can also act like a voltage drop. and do the same (making the pi shutdown)

Hmmm... When you test one, please give us feedback, i'm still uncertain if i use one..

Also, do you happen to know if there is a circuit of something in a pcb to know the battery life? for example, i saw a build with 3 or 4 leds, which represent 25, 50, 75 and 100% charge?
