GBZ (Update: added homemade safe shutdown)

Post by joeygbsn » Wed Feb 15, 2017 5:06 pm

Here's my GBZ that I built recently. Did mine a little bit differently than most on here. Used the GPIO pins for the button pcb and decided to not use a teensy or a usb hub. I etched the button pcb myself but didn't take any pictures of it and its a little hard to get out now. The battery monitor is just using a picaxe 08m2 to read the battery voltage and light the appropriate light on an rgb led. I taped all but a small rectangle in the case so the light only shines through a portion of the line across the top of the gameboy. This does not shut down the pi, it is just an indicator so I can shut it down before the powerboost cuts the output. Thanks to everyone for all the ideas and knowledge on this forum. Still need to get a screen protector at some point. Here's some pictures:

Thanks. It goes solid red when there's around 30 mins left and starts blinking red when there's around 5 mins left on battery. I still have one pin capable of being an output left on the picaxe so i may use it to initiate an auto shutdown when the battery gets really low. A lot of this is just taped in so i can add things if i want.

Recently built a safe shutdown board for my gbz. Works well although it does shut the pi down before its finished blinking its led 10 times, which so far has been fine although i think corruption could still occur. Now that ive got this build with all the features that i would need I'm thinking about making a second gbz with a little more care.

I designed the board using eagle then used the toner transfer method to transfer my design to the pcb. I then used ferric chloride to etch the pcb. Its kind of a messy process but you can make some decent boards.

I agree! Very nice. I will probably do this myself too for my next build.

Hey man, nice project!

I am looking for the schematic of this board since it's almost impossible/too expensive to get the branded safe shutdown board.

Can you share the electronic diagram with us? thanks a lot! ;)

Hey sorry I hadn't planned on releasing my schematics or anything. Making this one was by far more expensive than buying cambles board, I just wanted to do it for the experience. If you're interested in making one i suggest doing a little research on high side switching and doing some prototypes.
