Thanks for all the feedback. The PWM solution that wermy mentioned is interesting, but I think I'll go down the fibre route popcorn suggested as it seems simpler.

I've been toying with the idea of having one or more externally visible LEDs to indicate power status (on, charging, charged, low battery). It seems that a low battery LED would be easiest to add, as the powerboost 1000c provides a breakout point for this (labelled as "LBO"). After a bit of research...
