Getting my audio working was probably the most time consuming/difficult part for my project, but I got it all working eventually and its definitely worth doing it properly! I recommend the USB audio way personally, as the PWM method was too much of a pain for me.

Is your speaker wiring correct, off the top of my head my speaker is -ve on the left and +ve on the right. Seems to me you have them wired back to front to the amp? I've wired up the USB audio directly to a speaker, works fine. As soon as I wire in the 2.5w amp, lots of feedback/hissing. Here''s how i wired it:
