I don't have any way to test it, but does alsa not provide such functionality? Like set output device by hands. Or even by just pull down USB card in alsabase.conf? Or something like that.

I'm not sure about speed of USB2.0 and SD card, I think they are pretty the same, but I think keep system and roms in separated drives can extend life of your system's SD card. Not sure about, but I think count of read/write operations for SD without roms will be less.

According to this you can do it. Also I wonder if it's possible by just creating a symbol link. Like ln -s /dev/sdb/roms /home/pi/RetroPie/roms.

Sure, the community is much smaller, but i can't share the experience from RetrOrangePi, the RetroPie Port for OrangePi. It is really stable now and Stevie is working hard to make this even better. So far everything worked without a problem, if you know what to do. It is not plug and play, for sure...
