What's the amp rating on your USB power adapter? Adafruit recommend using a USB adapter that can provide at least 2 amps. This is the one that I use , haven't had a problem with it yet. That breakout might only work with the Ardunio, but I'm not sure.

My wired USB keyboard has never worked with my Raspberry Pi Zero when it's plugged into a non-powered hub. The only keyboard that works with my non powered hub is my Wireless Logitech k400 keyboard. I think wired USB keyboards just demand too much power.
