help setting controls for MAME?

Hi,
I don't know if everyone is having this issue, but I can't control MAME games at all. I'm having games loading in both Mame4all-pi and lr-imame4all but I don't know where do I set controls?
coincidentally, I have the same issue with ports such as duke nukem...
