That happened to me when the SD card was in the cartridge instead of the pi itself but i'm assuming yours is already in the pi.

On my GBZ the only thing i'm able to use with USB is the keyboard. Not edimax wifi, not usb to ethernet, not usb ROM transfer, just keyboard.
