You technically don't need a safe shutdown but Camble is currently sold out of the one for the Adafruit PB. The Adafruit cancels the need for the BG powersuppy.

But a safe shutdown switch would be required either way, correct? Adafruit doesn't have a safe shutdown programmed in?
