If you backlight looks a little blue, then you're probably over voltage on the little led. Try a 10ohm resistor for the backlight, they only need 3.2v normally, so 3.3 direct does work, but can melt them! Thanks for the advise moosepr I ended up soldering back the resistor to avoid burning the LED....
