Vintage Panasonic RX-5025 Boom Box Bluetooth Speaker Mod

Post by prerunnerseth » Wed Aug 10, 2016 5:41 am

Just wanted to start a thread for one of my other projects. Its in the retro theme, but not gaming related.

Project:
Add bluetooth to a vintage 80's Panasonic RX-5025 Boom Box and add a massive LiPo battery pack and built in charger. Plan to keep all other original boom box functional. (radio and cassette)

Parts List.
Panasonic boombox from Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/371698726267?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT
Sure bluetooth module from Parts Express. http://www.parts-express.com/sure-elect ... c--320-351
LiPo Battery (TBD)
Lipo Charger (TBD)
Various DC-DC converters (TBD)

My bluetooth module is already here and my boom box comes in today. Ill tear it apart and hopefully fix the radio needle. Need to assess what the battery requirements will be and how much space I have to work with. Then go ahead and get the bluetooth module installed and tested.

Hi there,

as i am working on a DIY bluetooth speaker, i have read about a few things myself.
Here is a cheap alternative for the bluetooth receiver: http://www.dx.com/de/p/yet-m1-bluetooth ... ite-374779
It might not be BT 4.0 but it is much cheaper and smaller. Maybe this could be useful for you.

Anyway, nice project if you can keep the Panasonics visual style. Keep us updated!

Edit: Bluetooth 4.0: http://www.dx.com/de/p/bluetooth-v4-0-e ... 6wZNSOLQ-U

Eh, cost isn't a big issue for me. I got the module installed yesterday. Ill have to take some pics when i get it opened back up for the battery install. I found out yesterday that if you buy the sure module directly from them you can pay an extra 0.99$ and get a custom bluetooth name. I went ahead and ordered another one with a custom name for this project. Its running off A/C right now and sounds pretty dang good.

Are you using a Pi Zero for this project?
