Game cover art should inspire you. When I look over my collection of games and decide what to play, I'm looking for a game cover to speak to me and get me into the game, draw me in to play it.
Besides using a consistent format, my favorite NES game covers use pixelated art from the game itself, for example:
These covers while more realistic or artistic, don't inspire me to play these games, and they are among my favorite games! I don't get a good sense of what the game looks like or any of my favorite items or features from the game are hidden.
So I went to Photoshop and made a quick template with a few elements online:
After about 3 hours creating ~30 covers for my favorite NES games...

I'd like to spend more time crafting some really unique and interesting screenshots from games, and that takes a lot of time surprisingly!
Will post these files if people like/want them. I'm updating a few things still.

I love it! I was wondering what it would look like with homebrew games?
So I redid 20 of them with your concept. Some of these games didn't have official covers that I was aware of, while others already had amazing ones, but for the purpose of the exercise, I redid them all anyway.
