Although the prs-tech board is awesome and only 15$ or so, I knew I could make a cheaper build. This build only cost me about 35$. It's basically the prs-tech build but with a USB controller and soldered it to the USB pads on the pi, so many thanks to him/her for the inspiration.

Any USB controller will work, I used the innext controller: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MYUDDCV/re ... 2zbE3VKXAF

The same hdmi cable as the prs-tech suggestion: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J4DYO74/re ... 2zbT2PFSNZ

BAT42 diode: https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/ ... ND/3104368

HDMI USB power adapter: https://www.ebay.com/i/182741332011

Pi zero

Have you tried this with an 8bitdo controller?

Have not, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Seems expensive though.

I thought about doing a generic Xbox 360 but it’d be pointless with a pi zero since it can’t play joystick required games. Perhaps a torn down pi 3

Then again, the pi 3 may require too much power. It’d be an interesting experiment to see if it works.

Yeah, it might be too large for it.
PI3 can't play xbox 360 games either, so it wouldn't make a lot of sense....
