My converted icade arcade cabinet

Post by Alfie_T » Wed Nov 15, 2017 2:39 pm

Hi all

I bought a second icade arcade cabinet (for iPad) off eBay and converted it to work with a Pi 3 and RetroPie. This is the finished article and a few pics.
Parts usedShow
  • Icade (2nd hand eBay)
  • Raspberry Pi 3, 5v USB charger & SD card
  • Picade hat (Pimoroni)
  • Arcade buttons (Arcade World UK)
  • Sanwa JLF-TP-8Y Ball Top Joystick (Arcade World UK)
  • 8" Eyoyo TFT with 12v power supply (Amazon)
  • Marquee - vinyl sticker (eBay)
  • 3mm acrylic sheet for marquee & bezel (Homebase)
  • 50 cm USB LED Strip LIght (eBay)
  • Metal momentary switch (eBay)
  • Bezel - just black card cut to size
  • Fused IEC Mains Socket (eBay)
  • Black paint, epoxy resin and off cuts of wood
  • 2 gang extension lead - 240v 10 Amp
  • Computer power lead
  • Speaker - from Magpi magazine AIY project kit
  • Various cables - for output on back of unit, connecting LED etc (eBay)
  • Total cost approx £209
Originally I was going to keep the cost down by using the original iCade joystick and buttons but they are very poor and unresponsive - the new Sanwa joystick is great.

The Picade hat is definitely worth £15 - This controls the joystick and button inputs, a 3W I2S DAC/amplifier & soft power switch.

The back piece is just a piece of painted mdf with a few holes drilled into it.

The original coin button is just for show but I wired the LED to the Picade hat and it works fine.

The small momentary button on the front is used to safe power on/off the system.

I ended up spending more than I wanted but overall I'm chuffed withe the end result :D

I tried to keep is as simple as possible. The screen has a separate power supply (Power input for monitor : DC12V-1000mA) and the Pi has a normal 2.5Amp USB charger - they are both plugged into a 2 way extension (all this is inside the unit)

This type of thing https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aptii-Socket-P ... dpSrc=srch

The soft power button doesn't cut power to the monitor this way - this is why there is a power button on the back (on the IEC mains socket)

Ok i see... from wall to outlet and then extension, from there, 2 power supplies (12V, 5V) directly to the devices... simple as ABC lol
