Pi Zero in snes controller

Post by Lcf » Mon Nov 05, 2018 9:38 pm

Hi, this is my first project that i´ve made some months ago.

I inspired myself with PRS-Tech SNES Zero and in @another_russell proyect.

My idea was putting all the things needed in a non-original snes controller. I bought an usb type because I didn´t known that the gpios can work for that.

I wanted to take only one cable (Video) from the controller. So I had two options, struggle an iphone 5 battery because of it´s low proflile or the HDMI powered solution.

At the time I did this I didn´t found any Li-Ion charger circuit tiny y cheap enough for the proyect so i decided to do the HDMI version, but i can tell you that the battery solution also fit inside (only the heat may be a problem).

Parts used:

SNes type Usb controller: https://gearbest.com/game-controllers/p ... id=1433363
A used USB hub: (like this: https://www.worldcamdemexico.com/productos/USB-523.jpg)
Pi zero 1.3: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2885
Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2819
HDMI ultrathin cable: https://www.steren.com.mx/cable-elite-h ... 3-6-m.html
Bat A42 shoktty Diode: locally bought, like this (https://media.rs-online.com/t_large/F5444758-01.jpg)
HDMI power inserter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LQ ... UTF8&psc=1
Epoxic plastiline
Black paint
Double side tape

I started by desasembling and desoldering the USB hub, it was a four port type, then i disasembled de USB controller, taked out the usb cable (the four coulored cables were usefull to connect everything), relocated the capacitors, resistors and L/R cables and solder it again on the other side of the PCB, removed the plastic separators , then I cutted the space for the HDMI and USB ports and put the double side tape for give some feedback to the buttons.

The HDMI power inserter had to be open to solder the diode to prevent unesesary voltage in the HDMI out.

The green epoxic plastiline was for repair my poor cutting and the black paint to make it less horrible.

This was my first raspberry proyect and I´m very happy with it, up to two players can play using the USB port (i use a xbox 360 controller) and I can add games by usb or even use a normal keyboard to modify anything if I need.

I also tried to use a PI zero W but the power by the HDMI wasn´t enought, I guess that by removing some services on retropie can work, also use a good HDMI cable, i had three qualities of cable and only the cheapest and the best did the function.

Nice project! If you want to use a battery and the charger board size is a problem you can make a cable with the charger PCB outside, and only a connector inside the Gamepad attached to the battery

Thanks, this one is powered by the hdmi cable using a hdmi power inserter (usb 5V). I mencionned in the post that i explore the possibility of using a battery for power up the raspberry, it fit with a power boost, a charge circuit and an iphone 5 battery, the only problem was that i didnt have a li-ion charger available at that moment, but I am sure that everything fit inside, I preffer the power inserter option because it don´t need to be charged. Recently I apply the YaYa´s tweks for a quick boot (thanks for that) and it starts in only 20 seconds, its fantastic :D
Also I was thinking in make another proyect with an snes controller with a tiny screen in the middle and with battery, then I saw the VMU proyects and I think that will be my next proyect.
