My DSL Pi project
I am planning to start off my first project, so I'm very new and I have zero knowledge on how to solder and do electronics (if you can please could you share your knowledge on electronics). However I am willing to try my best to complete this and I will document my journey on this thread. I am planning on starting this in January 2019. I will not be doing sound to start off with however I might come back to it and add it

Here are the parts I need to get:
- DS Lite (Refurb off ebay)
- Raspberry Pi zero W
- 3.2" screen
- Screen connectors; by VeteranGamer
- 2000 - 3000 mAh LiPo battery
- Adafruit Micro LiPo w/microUSB
- GB Classic Volume Switch Potentiometer
- Power switch
- Female Audio Stereo Jack
- Micro SD card (128GB)
Other Stuff:
- wire
- kapton/electric tape
- RetroPie Wii U Theme; By VeteranGamer

the build is possible....

but if you have zero experience or knowledge, you may be jumping into the deep end with this one.....

the build you've listed has encountered alot of issues along the way....
the most vital and the one that will cause you the biggest headache is the amount of space you....
(look at his build, it couldn't even close the housing properly)


Also....
the Raspberry Pi3 A+ dos require a decent power source.....
a Adafruit Micro LiPo, just isn't gonna cut the mustard....
and
you also don't really require a Teency, all you controls can be done via the GPIO
(especially a space is limited in the NDSL)


I would highly recommend for a first project....
get a kit
Something like the GBP FE, Kites CSO (lite) or even try ABH GB SP
rather than building from scratch....

if you take your time going through this forum...
you'll see a lot of people that hope to do this project or that project....
and when they hit hurdles and stumbling block, end up shelving the project
(this is mainly due to lack of experience and knowledge... and running before walking)

if you do hit a stumbling block or hurdle, be sure to post it (no matter how basic you may feel it is)
someone will surely be able to get you past or over it.....

I second Veteran on this.

It's an awesome project, but daunting and likely demoralizing for a first run. With enough persistence and patience, I'm sure you could pull it off, but why not tackle something that'll help you build your skills and knowledge first.

I'd hate for any prospective modder to get so frustrated they give up on the whole hobby for choosing too big of a first bite.

Good luck with whatever you decide though; even the simpler projects can be tricky when you're just starting out, so don't feel bad if you go with a ready-to-go kit with fewer parts.

wow! Thank you both for your advice, I didn't expect such soon responses. I'm going to try this project still however I am going to make quite a few changes to it:

First I am not going to be doing sound in this build as that is way beyond me at the moment and I'll have to figure that out later on.

Second I am going to not be using the Raspberry Pi 3 A+ but instead the Pi zero W to make it much more energy efficient and to have more space in the DS.

Third I didn't realise i didn't need the teensy board so I am not going to use that (also please could you tell me what GPIO pins need to go to which bit on the DS Motherboard I found this image online - I'm not sure if this image useful or not)

to help to gain knowledge on...

How to enable GPIO controls
How to enable a SPI LCD
How to enable Audio
Power Supply (PSU)

like the Game Boy Zero Support (just to name one)
that will also be useful....


if you have ZERO knowledge....
your best option is to start doing a lot of research (fail to prepare, then prepare to fail)
especially as most of, if not all of the queries or assistance you might need have already been covered and resolved....


have a plan of you what you want in the build....
then research how you can enable those in your build...
if they seem too difficult, then try to find an alternative solution


all the info is already out there (especially the basics)

if once building, you run into any issues, then feel free to ask

Hello again, it's been a while and I have been doing quite a bit of research.

I am planning on doing the minty pi v3 project and maybe the circuit sword / circuit sword lite before I begin this project to gain some more knowledge.

Get the mintyPi practice boards and a multimeter to test connections or you will likely fail in these projects.
