New hosting!

Post by wermy » Fri Mar 31, 2017 12:18 am

Hey everyone!

tldr: Forums should be faster and more stable now. :D

I've got us moved to some better hosting with more resources, so the forums should be much snappier and more stable. We're also running the latest version of phpbb (the software that runs the forums), so you'll notice some nice little features here and there like being able to use emoji keyboard characters in posts: 💩

The only thing we lost in the migration/upgrade was the mentions forum extension we were using. As it turns out, that extension was a major source of memory issues, which was (I think) causing a lot of the forum errors in the first place. So, mentions won't work for the time being, but there is a new (presumably better) mention plugin being worked on that I'll keep an eye on and incorporate it when it's ready. You can still quote someone or send them a PM if you need them to see something.

If you're seeing some weird behavior after the switch, try clearing your browser cache. I (and a few other members already) saw some weirdness like every popup menu being open until I did a hard-refresh of the page. If you run into any other issues, please let me know!

Congrats on the new hosting!
I noticed 2 issues :
the code tag doesn't look like it takes my new lines

Code: Select all

line 1
line 2
line 3
and also pop-up menus seem to be open by defaults :

yeah I'm seeing the every popup bug. glad a hard refresh will cure it.. also seeing mangled icons on the buttons in the post editor. hopefully the refresh will cure that too ;) edit: it did!

Great work though. server migrations are never easy or as plain sailing as you'd hope!

If you don't know how to perform a refresh of the page, this is a super simple and 100% accurate way, with Chrome:
press F12
the developer menu opens, go to the tab Network
check the option Disable Cache
refresh the page (the main forum homepage for example)

go back to the menu and uncheck the option if you wish so :) (cache will be used then)

thanks for the upgrade wermy! :)
Cheers! :D

For a hard reload on a phone, put this in the addressbar when on the site:

Code: Select all

 javascript:location.reload(true)

Seems great wermy, thanks!

I still don't see the option for changing the amount of posts per page though... Is that something that can be added? Only reading 10 posts before having to load the next page is a bit frustrating.
