Yes with this setup the speakers are on until you insert headphones. The plug actually trips the internal switch and cuts the signal to the speakers so it will only play sound from the headphones. The only disadvantage I've had so far is using the 10K pot, a large portion of the dial is useless because the dial lowers the output sound too much. I'm guessing if I used 5K or less it would have more of a range.

I can't speak for any amp other than the Adafruit one since it's the one I used, but you should try setting it up like the diagram and seeing how it works out. How are your wiring it? Everything is the same except instead of the built in pot it has pinouts for connection.

Looking at this diagram I am noticing that the 5v power coming from both the adafruit AMP and the USB Sound Card are connected to a breakout board. Why not just connect it to the USB Hub? I have been having some power issues and I am wondering if this makes a difference. Also, Can I just connect these 5v to the main breakout board I am using for everything else that ultimately gets connected to the power boost?

I followed this wiring, but I have a problem. The volume is really low. Even without the potentiometer, the volume is too low. I am using the original GB speaker, maybe that is why?

Does anyone have a diagram for stereo headphone jack wiring + mono speaker? It's confusing what to do if we're NOT bridging L+R together.
My best guess is to wire (-) from each L+R amp output to the headphone connector ground.

Actually I think I figured it out by looking at helders audio pcb. I'll try it later and post results.

Have you made any progress in the meantime? I'd be very interested in this as well.

Can't test it, but you could try this:

Fleders suggestion will work with headphones. For the speaker you additionally have to solder a wire from either LI or RI to RO.
