Putting the Pi Zero into the NES Classic?

I was just watching some NES Classic teardown videos, and it seems there is just enough empty space to also put a Zero into it:

But the question is how to wire the controller to the GPIO?
Would the following guide also work with a Pi Zero and the NES Classic controller?
Connecting a Wii Nunchuck to a Raspberry Pi
The idea is to leave one controller port as is, but wire port two to the Pi Zero, and then just switch the controller/usb/hdmi ports depending on what you want to play, making it a two in once device! Any thoughts? Thanks, long time lurker, first time poster!
