Pi 3 b+ fan. Should I use one?

Post by TurtleFlyte » Tue Oct 30, 2018 10:40 am

I have a build with a pi 3 b+ and am planning on playing ps2 games on it. Does the pi 3 b+ get to hot when playing ps2 games? If it does, should I use a fan or something else and can you recomend me one?
I assume it does get hot.

firstly, if you already have a build just try it out and see if it gets hot....

secondly, are you actually sure that you're able to run PS2 on a Pi3/Pi3B+ (i dont think it does, you can hardly run PSP if at all).....

but
putting a decent heatsink might help, and the fan that Kite uses (even thou a bit expensive) is a really good low profile option....
(if these are needed)

PS: IMHO, people need to be a bit realistic in their expectations....
for me if a system/game doesn't run at a decent frame rate, its just not worth the bother
(theres no bragging rights for something that doesn't play as it should)

It’s actually a pi 3 model B not B+.
I’m going off of this build: https://www.instructables.com/id/GamePi ... r-Console/
Do you have a link to the fan Kite uses?

im not 100% certain if this is the exact fan.....

but its very close (if not the one)

https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/ ... ND/2242564
https://www.mouser.co.uk/ProductDetail/ ... qlEALw_wcB

it is a bit pricey (compared to others)....
(and i'm sure Kite gets it for alot cheaper... with the quantities he buys)

but its very low profile (and doesnt need to be placed on top as it has side venting/blowing)
runs of 5V
most probably doesnt sound like a plane taking of
and is tried and tested (used in 100s of circuit swords)

you may be able to source one locally for a slightly cheaper cost

PS1 should run ok, but this a very dependent on the game....
(NOT all games will run as they should, just try and see....)

Should PSP and PS2 games run on that?
