This is exactly what flux is for. Adding new solder works because it will likely have a flux core.

Flux paste pens also go a long way in making your life simpler.

I have great success with my trusty 30w, the tip is ground to a skew chisel point (almost like a flat screwdriver), so i can choose between using a wide flat side, a small corner or even the front edge. But what i discovered a while back is the importance of cleaning often on a wet sponge. No matter what your iron or tip is, once it oxydize it will not transfer heat properly.

Has anyone had issues with 60/40? What sort of solder are you guys using?

Honestly, experience goes father than what solder blend you use in this application. 60/40 is fine. 63/37 works as well. I've used both, but only because it was closer to hand
