Yes, that is how it works with the script i wrote that also has on screen battery monitoring with helders add on board. You can also toggle on and off the on screen icons by holding select down for two seconds.dryja123 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2017 9:19 amI was thinking about using the button to execute the script and the power switch to kill the power once the OS has been safely shutdown.HoolyHoo wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2017 9:17 amHeads up, if you are using Helders LCD backboard, this simple shutdown will not work in that the backlight will always stay on as it is tied directly to battery. The SD style backboard uses a transistor to cut power through a pi gpio. I believe Helder will have that on his newer board in the future.
Also, I'm not sure, but, what happens if the pi freezes? How will the power cut out if the "power" button script has frozen for whatever reason?

Re: Shut Down Button Location
Yes. This.
But I am very curious as to what location to put the button as well. I don't think I'll attempt Veteran's method this time around. But I'd like to figure out where I could put a hole in before I get too much more inside the case.
My thinking has me drilling a hole along the left side. Somewhere between the middle and the top left screw post. And closer towards the bottom. I've held the case a lot in all possible ways I can think of and this seems a good placement I think. And I already know my tactile switch will be pretty low profile based on the L/R buttons I've already put in. They stick out just a bit from the tin and are easy enough to press and easy enough to not press by accident.
Just seeing if there was a place, location, button recommendation by the developers.

Re: Shut Down Button Location
my bad, i must of read it quickly...

it is the same as the start/select, its the best size to use because of the low profile.....
and as for the freezing, its some thing that hadnt cross my mind... mainly because i've never had a pi freeze on me (thats not to say it wont happen)
but the only solution would be to let the battery run flat....
my safe shutdown solution works for me, i had it planned for my build before another option was available...
but i would strongly recommend that most people opt for Helder/HoolyHoo method, its safer and has had more thought put into it specificly for this build....

Re: Shut Down Button Location
@VeteranGamer,
It happend to me several times, i just made a tactile emergency reset on the run pin and gnd, next to the composite on pi zero.
Just a press and it reboots.. so no need to drain the battery or disconnect it

Re: Shut Down Button Location
Hey everyone, how is everyone progressing with their safe shutdown button placements? I placed mine in a similar position that Veteran used but it won't work with a clear faceplate.
I'm really searching for other options because my current build is going to be a clear build. I don't want to cloud up the beauty for the print with 3 globs of hot glue.
I measured the space in the front of the tin, next to the power switch, and it wouldn't close properly because of how wide the button is.
Here's my placement on my tester and current build:
Thanks!

Re: Shut Down Button Location
Wassup. I put mine on side of the tin near back and hook into the Left trigger GND.
Ive used two types so far, one thats perfectly flush with tin and one that ever so slightly sticks out so not to allow for an accidental press.
