Also is there a technical reason why we don't cut out around the hdmi port so we can plug the minty pi into a tv and pair a controller?
The Pi Zero will be locked to the 320x280 display and it's likely that your HDMI monitor won't be able to handle that resolution.

What causes the resolution to be locked to that? Is it a hardware or software issue. I might look into it once my pi zero gets here and see what I can come up with if it's software.

It's deliberate: fbcp ( https://github.com/tasanakorn/rpi-fbcp ) simply copies the framebuffer, and fbtft spits it out on the SPI display. So you *can* run it at higher resolutions, but console text becomes unreadable, anything like raspi-config becomes unreadable, etc. I also wonder if there are any performance gains by reducing the resolution (less to copy), but I haven't tested that. But yeah, if you wanted you could put the resolution to something higher in /boot/config.txt to make it probably work with more TVs/monitors.

Have you seen the videos or the pictures on the first post? there are no headers, the pi is soldered directly to the controller PCB.

This will be my first handheld project, never soldered before so I'm going to practice on some old gbc cartridge pcb first. I really don't want to mess this up

If you are buying a shell to get all the buttons it should come with it, if not
