Framerate/Lag on MintyPi's SPI screen
Framerate/Lag on MintyPi's SPI screen
Hi all,
I am contemplating a mintypi build, but my biggest worry is the framerate of the SPI screen. I have read somewhere it is only in the 30s. Since many people have completed the mintypi build by now, I want to ask what is your experience with the framerate of the screen? (I don't have a 320x240 spi screen to test at home) Is a lag noticeable?
I am also interested in the following scenario:
On the NES the transparency effect was achieved via very quickly "flashing" sprites. With insufficient framerate this could lead to sprites being either invisible or not transparent at all. Did someone notice such a thing?

Re: Framerate/Lag on MintyPi's SPI screen
I don't see an issue with the frame rate, it looks fine to me, BUT now that you mention it, the one game I have played a lot since building it is Splatter house 3 on the megadrive. When you die in that game a flashing mask appears above your head to resurrect you. Now that you mention it, that flashing mask does often either not appear or only partially appear. I confess I hadn't really thought much about it as it doesn't detract from the game.
If you have an example of a NES game that uses this effect, let me know. I'd be happy to give it a try.

Yep, it's not as fast as a composite (or HDMI or DPI) screen. But it's really the only decent option for a project this small. That said I still find it to be perfectly fine and fun to play on.

I have noticed very minor things like this but in all honesty these do not affect the overall gaming and my enjoyment.
Let's be honest...if you want perfection (or as close as possible) with Retropie you'll use a Pi3 on a 55' TV

Re: Framerate/Lag on MintyPi's SPI screen
Why is DPI not an option? A DPI screen can be also directly connected to the pi without a controller board. Is it the lack of a screen with the proper size?

Re: Framerate/Lag on MintyPi's SPI screen
it's the number of pins through the hinge
instead of 8, it becomes 20+, and a loss of GPIO for controls, so now you need to do controls through USB via teensy or 32U4 on the PCB. since audio is also USB, you either have to lose audio, or add a usb hub inside the casing, or to the minty PCB (that didn't go too well previously)
too much effort for not enough gain but feel free to have a go yourself

Get a small cheep LCD in your project https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=2312
Wrap it all round a battery https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2292
Or use a custom PCB to make it really small https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2512
or make it really really really really tiny!! https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2919
