Re: MAME emulator help.
I think you need specific rom versions for MAME, Mame has a tons of different roms sets for different versions of the Emulator. The Retropie wiki is a good place to look for an answer to this.

Re: MAME emulator help.
as Helder advised, you'll need the right romset for Retropie....
heres a list of what to get....
https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/MAME
its recommended that for the Pi0/Pi0W that mame4all is used....
but i havent been able to get it to work
if you get hold of roms for MAME 0.37b5.... just select lr-mame2000 and most should work and you wont need to mess around with setting the buttons up....
perosnally the Mame experience on the Pi Zero is a little disappointing, some games work, some dont, some work really poorly or ok... its hit and miss, even with the right romset...
if your playing mostly capcom games (forget street fighter, its pointless with a gamepad) like final fight, three wonders etc... then go for FBA it plays them alot better...

Re: MAME emulator help.
id consider Final Burn Aplha (FBA) for that..... it plays alot better that Mame, espcially for capcom games (and some NeoGeo)

Strikers 1945 runs on FBA. Use libretro-fbalpha however as the others do not work.

Re: MAME emulator help.
PiFBA runs NeoGeo and CPS1/CPS2 games really well. One thing to note, you need the right romset and it's pretty old. You may be able to use CLRMamePro to format a newer or older romset into the proper one.
Another huge gotcha for me was I could not get PiFBA to work no matter what I tried. The issue ended up being the fact that I don't have my sound card yet and PiFBA will crash to Emulation Station every time without the usb sound card (using wermy's mintyPi image). If you still want to test, you can pass in the "--no-sound" parameter and it will boot right up.
Edit: same issue with MAME4All use "-nosound" to disable audio for testing.
