i'm really new to raspberry pi's but I am wondering how to access the location on the SD where the ROMs are placed. I am using windows 10.

The end of wermy's written guide goes into great detail on that. Have a read there.

I tried everything there and eventually switched from win32discimager to the recommended Etcher but when I try to burn an image to my SD card it displays: error: unmount failed.

Where did you buy your SD card? What kind of card are you using?

Edit: also make sure you're using SDFormatter and make sure format size adjustment is set to on.

I am using a sandisk 32gb sdhc (this one https://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-Extreme- ... +microsdhc ) and I tried formatting with SDFormatter and it still gave me the same error.
also: I bought them in a 2 pack and I'm burning the other one right now.
another edit: the new one gives me the same error

update: I got a successful burn by using a USB SD reader instead of my PC's on-board SD card reader. Although i still can't access the ROM locations I found the wpa_supplicant file so i can just FTP the games over wifi.

Glad you got it working. And yes only the /boot partition will be accessible from your PC, that's normal. :)
