Screen not turning on

Post by mnelliot » Sat Sep 02, 2017 11:37 am

I finally got everything soldered on the pin holes, and I was having trouble with the ground connection so I connected a wire from the pi to the ground connection below where the ribbon cable connects. The multimeter said everything was in check so I proceeded to connect the screen, and the pi turned on with a green light, but the screen was completely black and unpowered. No backlight, nothing. I did everything in the guide video where I cut a little bit off the LCD screen connector on each sides, and put masking tape on the top to thicken it up. Screen just isn't working. Any troubleshooting I can try?

If I zoom in real close on the picture of the ribbon cable from behind it looks like the left most contact is peeling up. If that is the case you can trim all the contacts down to the same level and try again. As long as you get connections it should still work. But I would wait for others to chim in before you do that. I'm no expert. Also remember when you do finally get it powered but still not getting a picture you have to restart your Pi every time you reposition your ribbon cable. The screen needs to be sent codes from the Pi at start up to work.

Can you post pictures of the ribbon connected to the button PCB and the LCD back board? Also, what's your voltage reading from the button PCB and the backboard. Are you sure you're getting power to the LCD?

I would try doing what I did when my screen wasn't working (although I at least had the back light on just a black screen). First make sure you're 100% confident all of your ribbon connectors are lined up perfectly. Then solder the GND gpio to the second pin on the left of the ribbon connector attached to the pcb. Next solder another wire from the 5v gpio to the VCC test pad. Make sure nothing's bridged. Hopefully I was clear enough in my wording. Hope it helps.
