img file creating small FAT16 SD card

Post by Kevin » Sat Feb 15, 2020 8:57 am

Hi all

I'm using the mintyPiv3_20190721.img file, which I think is the latest, and Etcher to create my SD card. I'm using 64GB and larger cards because I wanted plenty of room for games and movies (KODI). But I still run out of space. I see the img file creates FAT16 formatted SD cards which doesn't allow large disks.

Does the format come from the img and Etcher? I tried to reformat the card but it seems to return to FAT16 after loading the img.

I am transferring the games using sftp. (running sftp on the minty using ssh to connect to my Mac).

How do I get a larger disk (SD) format that will use the whole card? Thanks

Follow this guide to turn on FTP not SFTP and to transfer roms or other files.

The SD card image will automatically expand the drive to it's max size once you run it for the first time after burning it to the SD card. The Retropie OS is based on linux and uses the EXT4 (I think it's this version) and not viewable through windows except that tiny boot folder which you see in Windows.

Use the guide above to see the real size and directories where you are supposed to put the games into and I don't think kodi movies will run well on the pi0 aka the mintyPi.
