Pi Won't Boot When Power Is Applied

Post by CuriouslyStrongMints » Tue Jul 25, 2017 7:24 pm

I just finished soldering all the GPIO holes to the button PCB, but when i apply power to the Pi it won't boot. I have manually connected X, L, DOWN, 3.3V, and 5V to their correspondant pads with wire, (3.3V on the VCC under the ribbon connector, and 5V to the VCC to the right). What could I have done wrong? It's most likely my soldering (thanks $20 Weller soldering iron)

Hi,
Lots of problems here. You are using far, far too much solder and I can see several spots where you are bridging neighboring pinholes and test pads. In fact it looks like your VCC/GND test pads below the ribbon connector are bridged, as well as the 5V/GND GPIO pinholes which is why it's not booting when you apply power (you may have fried your pi).
Not trying to be rude but do you have any friends who might be more experienced with this sort of thing and could help you fix it? Is there a maker space in your town you could visit? At the very least I'd check out some youtube videos about soldering and basic electronics (simple arduino projects would be a good start) before taking a stab at this again.
Good luck!

WOW just WOW. So let's compare some images of a properly soldered Pi to that mess you have there:

see how there are no globs of solder and bridging of the GPIO pins? This is how it's supposed to look like not like that up there. This is a good example of improper tools and solder and experience. To fix that you need someone with experience and some solder braid or a solder sucker and start again. There is nothing we can tell you to do to fix it without a fresh start and to properly clean all that off and use proper tools and soldering iron tips.

I figured I would have to restart. I'll take the advice. Thank you, and sorry for the inconvenience.

No need to apologize. Hope you keep at it! Soldering does take practice but is a very useful and fun skill to have once you get the hang of it.

Haha, yeah sorry N64/PS1 minty will have to wait. It's an on screen battery monitor and shutdown. 😉
