Possible battery puncture

Post by MrDralixx » Sun Aug 06, 2017 8:22 pm

Ok. So I have gotten to the point where I was soldering the lipo to the charger board. I was using my helping hands to hold the battery as the weight of the battery kept moving the wire on me as I tried to solder to the board. I thought putting a bit of electrical tape around the helping hand clips would be ok, but it appears I put some indents into the battery casing.

Now I'm familiar with pretty much all new electronics having a smell to them and I had just taken this battery out of its packaging. But I don't know if this smell was there or not when I took it out of its packaging. None of my other batteries have the same smell, but they've been sitting out and/or used in other projects. Is it normal for a lipo to have a smell to them when they're new? Or did the imprints my clips left cause a small puncture?

LOL No. Not really ready to go that far. I checked with multimeter though and all looked ok. So I went for a less technical test. I covered the "puncture spots" with electrical tape. The smell went away within a few moments. I peeled some of it back and there was the smell again.

So now the battery is sitting on a pile of rocks at the far end of my yard.

Good thing I found that ebay seller offering 2-packs of the batteries. :)

As wermy said, "take your time".

Now just waiting for the batteries to ship from CA to MI. bleh

Very Dangerous, it meight have leaked that's what you smell.
Be very carefull with these, if they mix the stuff inside, it will turn into a sea of flames with high temp.
you could burn yourself VERY bad, or even end up BLIND.
Get rid of it.

Way ahead of you. :)

Took my oldest out to nearby state land that was set up as a firing range. (common in Michigan) He picked it off at 100ft with a Ruger 22lr on his first shot. (he's only 9) Pretty sweet explosion. My phone tipped over though, so I got no video.

Oh well. Taken care of now. :)

awww... was looking forward to some nice LiPo fire video. we need a few to post as sticky warnings for users since it seems to be a common "just how dangerous are they really anyway" type question.

I'm more worried that they DROVE somewhere with the battery is it's questionable state...

We were heading out to the "range" anyway. We practice every other week or so. I put the battery in a metal box towards the back of my pickup for the trip btw. :)
