5 vs 6mm Tacticle Switches

Post by BayouBlaster » Sat Oct 28, 2017 8:12 am

I'm embarking on my MintyPi journey and am ordering parts. The wiki calls for 6X6X5mm tactile switches while in the new video Wermy says the function button would work with a 6X6X6. Instead of ordering two different size buttons, would either size work for both the shoulder and function buttons? Any preference on size?

Both will work for shoulder buttons but it's going to come down to your preference on how sleek you want your build to look. I personally don't like when tact switches stick too far outside of my builds.

You can pick up a multi pack that comes with a bunch of different sizes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071KX71SV/re ... Rdxj4hOMkr

Will a 5mm work for the function button? Is the faceplate too thick for the 5mm to be used easily? How much of the 5mm button sticks out for the shoulder buttons? I don't think 1 extra mm would be too back if I just went with the 6X6X6s.

I really would suggest going 6x6x6 for even the shoulder buttons. It's very tight tolerances for the 5mm and if you have even a slight imperfection in drilling or filing, barely any of the button will stick out.
