After tinkering with it, I think I have the idea. All of the blacks need to be connected in one line and all of the reds need to be connected in one line?

How would you wire the line?
You need to join all the grounds in one line and 5v line in another line, i.e solder join them like in the tutorial video.

Yeah of course, that's how the original boards works
