Yes any speaker in there needs an amp.

When I trimmed my speaker it ended up a pretty tight fit inside the plastic ring that's molded into the front of the GB case. It basically snaps in place and stays there on its own. If you wanted you could add a dab of hot glue around the edge to make sure it doesn't go anywhere.

Nope, there's a little bit of plastic that'll be easy to cut through, then the base of the surround is like a heavy paper. It doesn't cut away as clean with a rotary tool, but you can most of it removed with that and then use a razor blade to clean it up.

Be careful you don't go TOO far as some point you'll run into the actual surround, which is rubber. If you cut too much of that away then it'll de-laminate from the paper it's glued to and the sound could suffer. I had to tack mine back down with a dot of rubber cement. If you want the speaker to fit inside the circular recess molded into the case you'll need to get awfully close to that rubber.

(I'm assuming you're using the same speaker I had from Parts Express. If it's another model then the above will probably not be useful.)

Cannikin did a very good describtion.

I cut the edges of my speaker off and modified the plastic ring in the original GB-case. I did fit in very thight, just added some extra hot glue around the speaker just to be sure. As cannikin already said, don't cut too much from the case. Do it step by step and try to fit your speaker into it time by time.
