Average spent
What is the average everyone is spending on their builds? I am curious as to what a typical build is costing along with what is the cheapest someone has done it for and what is the most expensive build so far with all the extras and bells and whistles?
Re: Average spent
The costs are falling and quality is going up practically every day. The custom build wermy just did costs around $190 plus tools. With kite's SAIO, it comes down to ~$150. Extra bells and whistles doesn't really cost a whole lot, since it would just be a high resolution screen (+$60ish) and a big speaker (+ <$8) which are arguably marginal upgrades, and maybe LEDs/fibre optic.ontoptherock wrote:What is the average everyone is spending on their builds? Re: Average spent
My last build was about 140 bucks and if I have all the parts and pieces, I can build the thing in just a few hours or less. My average time right now is 1.5 months due to waiting on parts.

Re: Average spent
man $140 is pretty good chedda! I think i am currently over 200+ for 2 builds, and not even close to all the parts yet. I'll know my final numbers once i finish ordering everything. I actually think shipping is killing me the most

Re: Average spent
I kinda got carried away while ordering parts (especially shells, old gb's and buttons, but also all the cheap switches and tactile and such I would usually buy in bulk even though I only need a couple) but I think money spent per build will probably be around 120 to 160€ all in all.

Re: Average spent
I've built one so far and it was around 180 Canadian to complete everything. I have ordered all the parts I need for a second one (all aftermarket this time)and it is looking like it will be 180-200 (currently at 180, but I still need a screen protector and some 3d printed items), I ordered the newest all-in-one board this time, and i'm excited to try it out!
I don't mind paying that price, it's taught me a lot, since I have never picked up a soldering iron in my life. Very cool project and i'm glad I stumbled upon it!

Re: Average spent
Hmmm.. well according to my spreadsheet I'm at CND$341.62. I am going to use a 640x480 screen though and that was $100 by itself. Also buying some parts from Adafruit is expensive because of duty and taxes. This does not include all the extra parts I bought or tools.

If you don't have any of the tools available it ends up being quite expensive... I haven't added my expenses up but it has to be an extra $200 tagged on to the parts. A Dremel, Soldering Iron, extra tips for Soldering Iron, solder, desoldering wick, wire, wire clippers, glue gun... I'm over $500 dollars now for sure.
Re: Average spent
I was trying my hardest to be as cheap as possible, but mistakes and miscellaneous things took the price to 150. Excluding miscellaneous items (and mistakes) I probably spent $115-ish. I made a Google spreadsheet of the prices, if you want it.ontoptherock wrote:What is the average everyone is spending on their builds? I just counted my spent. It is I think unbeliveable. $50+battery(old drone battery)+8Gb micro sd(from my phone).
