Variant 9 screen flickering?

Post by tlaloc » Sun Apr 23, 2017 3:54 am

Hi all!
Fairly new to this community - finally have most components to start building.
I got a BW screen from Amazon and looks like variant 9 was inside.
Thanks to VeteranGamer I found out that I don't have to remove the chip, instead I soldered a jumper cable to "convert to 5v".
The screen is working (hooray), but is flickering quite a lot - especially on blue in EmulationStation.
I removed the jumper to see if I had maybe soldered to the wrong pin on the chip, but - to my surprise - screen was still working and flickering was just as strong as with cable.
So what does this mean?
- can this screen work on 5v out of the box?
- is it impossible to get rid of the flickering?

Thanks!

check your solder joints of the jumper (it does need the jumper) .....
and the connections of the live and ground (red & black)
and most importantly you need to make sure its getting 5v, any drop in that and you'll get flickers....

the reason your getting the flicker without the jumer is for exactly the same reason, because your providing it with a voltatage lower than its expecting (12v, but getting posibly lower than 5v)

if you have a 5v 2a psu/charger would be ideal

Hi! Thanks for your reply... so I'll wait for my multimeter (ordered...) to check what voltage actually arrives at the board.
The jumper cable appears to be ok - it does affect the screen when i touch other pins than the second (and a non connected red cable doesn't).
Maybe I'll also resolder the cables on the pi zero... the connector cables on the display driver board are still the original soldering...
